How to read the verdict
- ✔ Above your floor even if the buffer is used up. The price holds even if the job runs over within the buffer.
- ⚠ Above your floor only if your estimate holds. Any overrun takes you below it. Consider a bigger buffer, a higher rate or tighter scope.
- ✖ Below your floor. After fees, this job pays less per hour than your business needs.
"Effective hourly" is the money that lands in your account divided by hours worked. To pass fees on, the invoice is grossed up: invoice = (project total + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − FX %). The full method, with a worked example, is in How to quote a freelance project.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get my rate floor?
Use the hourly rate calculator. If you've used it in this browser, this page fills in your floor and a suggested rate automatically.
Can I legally add payment fees to my invoice?
It depends on your payment provider's terms and on local consumer and surcharge rules, especially for consumer clients. Check both before you do it, and show the processing amount clearly.
